Air Conditioner Not Cooling

The air conditioner is essential to the modern world. It makes what would be uninhabitable places livable. It makes living spaces more comfortable and safe for people to live in. It is a problem when the air conditioner is not working properly, when it is unable to cool the place.

Modern air conditioners are built durably. They do not fail easily and can be serviced. There are several common causes of inadequate cooling that are easy to detect. The most common cause is dirty and bent condenser and evaporator coils.

The condenser coil releases the heat that was absorbed by the heat transfer fluid or refrigerant at the evaporator coil. A dirty or bent condenser coil will be less effective at releasing heat. The heat transfer fluid will begin another cooling cycle while still hot and as a result, the cooling capability of the unit is severely diminished. The dirty or bent coils are easy to detect and even easier to fix. A scheduled cleaning of the air conditioning unit and straightening of coil fins prevents the problem from ever arising.

A transfer fluid leak is another common reason why the air conditioner is not producing enough air. The way air conditioners work is by transferring heat which relies on the heat transfer fluid. If there is none or very little transfer fluid, the unit would not be able to function.

Corrosion is the primary cause of leaks. Another is freezing of the transfer fluid during extremely cold weather. In places with extremely cold winter, the heat transfer fluid must be formulated so that the transfer fluid do not freeze and expand to damage the pipes and coils. The transfer fluid is added with antifreeze to prevent freezing. This is similar to how fire suppression antifreeze is added to fire suppression systems so that the extinguishing compound does not freeze and becomes useless during cold months.
